VETERINARY VISIT: 19th/20th MARCH 2011 We were very fortunate to have had a visiting vet sponsored by Friends of the Cat who was here for 2 days recently. We had hoped that Barbara was going to be here for longer but she decided that it was more important for her to return to Skiathos earlier than planned. However, in the two days she was with us she spayed 37, mostly feral, female cats and neutered 12 toms. All patients are recovering well and those I have seen following their operations are healing with no signs of infection. Many of those spayed were pregnant, so Barbara’s work was doubly important in an attempt to keep the cat population at bay. However, a word of warning to everyone – there are no doubt many that we missed, so please keep your eyes peeled for unwanted kittens dumped in or around rubbish bins. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped with the visit and in particular, the following people: • Dinah Sinclair, who helped catch feral cats and also looked after the vet during her stay • Guy Routh, who gave up his whole weekend to help with the surgery • Caroline Caldwell, who also helped with the surgery and with the clean up operation • Yorgos Anagnostou, who provided accommodation at the Pleiades • Elwin and Wendy Williams who very generously allowed us to use their house as a surgery • Mike Holmes, who trekked all the way to Vamvakies to catch cats • Beau and Bert Dendy, who supplied the vet with wonderful lunches during her stay • Maria Kotti, her mother Panagiota, and Dave Court who helped with catching animals in the Old Village I hope to arrange a visit from a Greek vet from Thessaloniki soon, so don’t put away those gloves just yet! Hopefully, this vet will also be able to help dogs and pets, so his visit will be a very important one. Julia Browne |
